The markets closed mixed as the Dow recovered
some of its losses from yesterday, while the
NASDAQ drips further away from the all important
2,000 mark. The NASDAQ, which started in positive
territory but descended down all day, had a
heavy trading volume of over 1.966 billion shares,
while the NYSE had a volume of over 1.229 billion
shares traded. Gainers included: Abercrombie

US Trade Deficit for Q4 2000 grew to a record
$115.27 billion, but still slightly below
analysts estimates.

The National Association of Home Builders
(NAHB) reported that its NAHB Housing Market
Index rose to 59 in March, a 2 points increase
from previous month. Single Family homes
rose a robust 6 points, and the 6-month
outlook index rose 4 points. Traffic of
Potential Buyers Index however, dropped
4 points.

US Jobless Claims for week ending March
10th. was unchanged, while the 4-week moving
average rose to 364,000.

The Philadelphia Fed Survey Index, a good
measure of manufacturing activity in the
Federal Reserve district, rose back to 23.5%
in march.

US Import Prices rose 0.1% in February,
due mostly to increased energy prices, while
the January data was revised to a fall of
0.1%. US Export prices dropped 0.2% for
the same period, due to agricultural prices

brokerage Charles Schwab gained 5.05% after
warning on its fiscal Q1 outlook, and introducing
cost cutting plans.
- Duratek
gained today after postponing its fiscal
Q4 and year 2000 earnings announcements
yesterday.
- Borders
Group gained 0.59% after reporting earnings
yesterday that beat First Call estimates.

contract from Sabre Holdings. Sabre gained
15.65%.
- Rambus
lost 31.85% after an article on Electronics
News Online stated that Rambus' patent infringement
lawsuit against Infineon Technologies AG
is going in Infineon's way. Rambus disagreed
with the story. Infineon lost 0.14%.
- Airline
stocks gained despite earnings warning from
United Airlines and AMR, American airlines'
parent.
- Teenage
clothier American Eagle Outfitters gained
9.59% after reporting fiscal Q4 estimates
that beat First Call estimates by 3 cents
a share, and 32% above Q4 1999.
- AFTER
CLOSE: Adobe Systems, which lost 4.31% in
regular trading, is gaining in after hours
trading after reporting fiscal Q1
earnings that beat First Call estimates
by 5 cents a share.
- AFTER
CLOSE: Oracle, which lost 8.56% in regular
trading, reported fiscal Q3 earnings of
10 cents a share, in line with its lowered
expectations. Oracle also warned about the
coming quarters.
- AFTER
CLOSE: Compaq is extending its gains in
after hours trading after announcing that
it will cut 7% of its workforce, or 5,000
jobs so as to save about $500 million to
$600 million. Compaq also lowered its outlook
for fiscal Q1 2001. Compaq blamed its problems
on the slowing economy and the cut throat
price wars in the Server and PC markets
(a war it also announced it will fight aggressively).

The markets had another carnage as both the
Dow and the NASDAQ close below their all-important
10,000 and 2,000 marks. The NASDAQ, which tried
all day to stage a rally, had a very heavy trading
volume of over 2.148 billion shares, while the
NYSE had a volume of over 1.379 billion shares
traded. Gainers included: Almost Family, Applied
Materials, Ciphergen Biosystems, Circuit City
Stores, CSK Auto Corp, Dell, Digital Insight,
EMC Corp, Factset Research Systems, Galey &
Lord, Globespan, Hispanic Broadcasting, Integra
Lifesciences, Intranet Solutions, JDS Uniphase,
Learning Tree, Loral Space, MarketWatch.Com,

US Business Inventories increased 0.4% in
January, slightly above estimates. Manufacturing
inventories led with a whopping 0.7% increase.
All sectors posted gains expect Wholesalers
inventory, which dropped. The Inventory
to Sales ratio rose up to 1.37.

For week ending March 19th, the Energy Information
Agency (EIA) and the American Petroleum
Institutes (API) announced that, US crude
oil inventory rose 8 million barrels and
9.5 million barrels respectively. Reuters
Survey of analysts expected a decrease of
1 million barrels. As for Distillates, the
EIA and the API saw drops of 1.3 million
barrels and 544,000 barrels respectively.
Reuters survey expected a decrease of 600,000.
Today's data shows that although the country
is not in a recession, inventory stockpile
is still above acceptable levels and the
Federal Reserve will likely cut about 50
bases points (0.50%) of interest rates.

International is paying $9.2 billion in
cash and stocks to acquire the financial

in after hours trading after announcing
that its quarterly losses have increased
to $2.6 billion, and the company issued
a sales warning for the next quarter.

CLOSE: Retailer Kohl's, which lost 1.04%
in regular trading, announced fiscal Q4
earnings that beat First Call estimates.
Kohl's attributed the strong performance
to new store openings.

CLOSE: Saks inc., the parent of retailing
giant Saks Fifth Avenue, which lost 1.54%
in regular trading, reported that its fiscal
Q4 profits will drop up to 20% due to markdowns
at its stores and the poor economic conditions.
